47 Rebel Without A Cause: John "Plato" Crawford

OH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. FORTY-SEVEN. FORTY-SEVEN PLATO ICONS. CLEARLY I AM INSANE.

Yeah, so, these are all of the character John "Plato" Crawford from the 1955 film Rebel Without A Cause. Um, he's the little gay kid. Played by Sal Mineo, who, though only sixteen at the time, was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance. And who, at the moment, I'm kind of... madly, desperately, hopelessly in love with, in case you couldn't tell by the billions of posts about him in my personal journal & the fact that I MADE FORTY-SEVEN GODDAMN ICONS OF THE SAME CHARACTER. And when I describe my love for Sal as "hopeless," it's a bit of an understatement, given the fact that he's dead. And, before that, gay. But hey, that's never stopped me before.

Obviously there are other important people in this movie, namely James Dean, who everybody just loves cuz he's James Dean & blaaah blah blah. Though, for the record, I love him too, I think he's just peachy. But you know? Overkill. (Pardon the tasteless pun.) So when I first started this set I was like, "JAMES DEAN IS NOT ALLOWED TO BE IN ANY OF THESE ICONS!" But then I got over it. Because you can't have the slashiness without Jim, & I do actually love James Dean a lot. (And if you think I am being ridiculous by making Jim/Plato slash icons, you obviously have not seen this film. GAYEST MOVIE EVER.) I even allowed Natalie Wood to show up in some of them, though for the record I HATE NATALIE WOOD & HER CHARACTER JUDY RUINS THE WHOLE DAMN MOVIE & THE ONLY REASON SHE EVEN GOT THE PART WAS CUZ SHE WAS SLEEPING WITH THE DIRECTOR SO THERE. But yeah. My point (& I do have one) is that a lot of these do include the other two members of the little Rebel family, but the one thing they all have in common is Plato. Darling, beautiful, broken little Plato. (I may be just a leeeeeetle obsessed...)

BTW: I did kind of try to really up the ante with these, meaning I really did the best I could & didn't save anything I didn't think was up to par. So even if you're not interested in the subject, I would still like to hear your comments/criticisms on the quality/style of these. Thank you very much & please enjoy your meal.

Notes:
05: Sal Mineo was from the Bronx & therefore had a very distinctive accent. Since this film is set in Anytown, USA, he tried not to sound too Bronx-y, but the boy couldn't help it. So they had to re-dub some of his lines, including, "You mean a head-shrinker?" Sal had trouble with his R's & pronounced it "head-shrinkah." You get to hear it in its pure, unadulturated, adorable form in the Rebel Without A Cause screen test, which is also worth viewing for other reasons (wait 'til the end).
08: DON'T BLAME ME FOR NAKED MORRISSEY IN THE LOCKER!!! IT WAS molly_bot'S SICK TWISTED IDEA!!!

Tutorial #1: Nita Krebs

Hey kiddos. I never thought I'd do this, but I've made my first tutorial.

Transform to in eleven kind-of-easy steps!

Fairly simple, though it does use Curves. Made in PSP6 (ANCIENT), but I can translate most tutorials for other programs, so I assume the reverse is true. Image heavy, I guess, but they're all small.

1. Crop & resize your base. Mine needed a lot of sharpening, but I didn't go too crazy on the base; you're going to be duplicating several times on different blend modes, so try sharpening those instead & see what you get. You can also smooth the skin on the base if you want.

2. Duplicate the base & set this new layer to Screen. Again, sharpen if you need to.

3. Duplicate once more & set to Overlay or Soft Light, whichever looks better. This is where we apply that blurry, ethereal effect. Using your Freehand Selection tool (lasso) with Antialias unchecked, select all the negative space using whatever selection type you prefer (I use Point to Point). You can make this easier by selecting the positive space (i.e. just trace around the subject) & then inverting the selection. (On mine this is Selections >> Invert.) Before I inverted I also held down the Ctrl key & used my lasso to select that space under her arm. You're going to want to zoom when you're selecting, but don't worry about being too exact. I didn't select that dark spot in the lower left corner because that's actually her knee.

4. Make sure the Overlay/Soft Light layer is your active layer. Then, go to Motion Blur (for me, Image >> Blur >> Motion Blur...). My Intensity was 10 Pixels, & my Angle was set to about 315°. You do what works best for you. If this isn't bright & glowy enough for you, you might try applying it to the Screen layer instead (or as well).

5. You can Select None now. Here's the result of all our effort so far:

6. Here's where we choose our light angle. Create a new raster layer & select your Flood Fill tool (bucket). Under Fill style, choose Linear Gradient. Then click the Flood Fill Options tab (that stripey thing). For me there's a Gradient drop-down menu; I selected Black-White & set the Angle to 45°.

I get the impression that making gradients in other programs is just as simple. Anyway, make sure your blank raster layer is active & then Flood Fill that. If I'm over-complicating things & you're totally lost on this then just take mine. If you want the light going a different way just flip/mirror it.

7. Put this layer right above your base & set it to Overlay. You should now have four layers: your base set at Normal, your gradient set at Overlay, your duplicate set at Screen, & your blurred duplicate set at Overlay.

8. Create a new raster layer above all the rest & Flood Fill it with dark blue (mine was #00144C). Make sure your Fill Style is set back to Solid Color or else you'll be filling with that gradient again & you'll have to Undo; I always forget to do that. Set this layer to Color & lower the Opacity; mine was 50%.

9. Say it with me now: CURRRRRRRRRRRRRVES! Turn on Curves, leaving the Blend Mode at Normal. For me it's Layers >> New Adjustment Layer >> Curves... . Do most programs not have this or something? I just discovered it a few days ago & find it incredibly easy & helpful to use... fun too! Anyway. I can't really tell you how to do this part. You just have to fiddle with it & find what looks good. Here are the settings I used for this particular icon (with each Input/Output representing a dot on the pre-existing line):

Channel RGB : Input 52 Output 77; Input 157 Output 207.
Channel Red : Input 37 Output 107; Input 188 Output 203.
Channel Green : Input 43 Output 45; Input 120 Output 133.
Channel Blue : Input 177 Output 142.

10. Yeesh, too bright! I created yet another adjustment layer set at Normal, only this time I chose Brightness/Contrast. I set the Brightness to -19 & the Contrast to 25.

11. You're pretty much done now; just gotta add brushes or a border or text or whatever else you want. You can also try adding an Exclusion layer of your dark blue above all the others; this will give you even more of a sepia-toned, opening-scenes-of-The-Wizard-of-Oz-sorta look. The only hint I'll give you is that I used this texture by colorfilter, desaturated & cut up into pieces.

Most of the pieces were set to Darken & placed between the blurred Overlay duplicate & the Screen duplicate, with low to medium opacity (20-35). That's the only tip I can give you on that, as my use of this texture was very jerry-rigged.

16 Anders als die Andern (Different From the Others)

Lately I really seem to specialize in icons nobody but myself would ever want to use. I think I just start looking for icons for myself & am not able to find any (usually for good reason), so I end up just doing my own & making too many & "sharing" them with all of you, my unwitting victims. But really, I think this is more your problem than mine. It's not my fault you're so uncultured. Go out, rent whatever it is I'm talking about, fall in love with it, & come back & take an icon. It's for your own damn good! Heathens.

That being said, I've iconized the 1919 German silent film Anders als die Andern (Different From the Others). Co-written by renowned sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld & starring Conrad Veidt (my dead spindly German Hitler-bashing bisexual boyfriend!), Fritz Schulz, Reinhold Schünzel, & Anita Berber, this was the first movie in history to deal explicitly with the subject of homosexuality. It was created partially to educate the public about Hirschfeld's ideas on homosexuality (namely that it's, shock, perfectly natural) & to protest the German anti-gay laws entailed in Paragraph 175 (not fully repealed until 1994). It is available today only in a fragmented form; when the Nazis seized power, one of their first actions (May 6, 1933) was to destroy Hirschfeld's entire library, including many prints of the film. I got it from NetFlix, & you should too, because it's amazing.

I got real bored with fancy brushes, that's why all these are pretty clean & simple. And all greyscale, except one.

And then she says something like, "I understand completely now. I want to devote my entire life to you. I want nothing more than to be your most true & loyal friend." Cinema's first faghag, created right there. <33

15 Rock Profile

Ooo, looky, I'm on a roll.

These are from the British television show "Rock Profile." I know absolutely nothing about it, except that a "Best Of" featurette is included on my "Little Britain: Series 1" DVD set & it's funny & I wanted to cap/iconize it. I also know that it stars Matt Lucas & David Walliams (of LB fame, which is why it's on the DVDs) & some guy called Jamie Theakston. And I know it's all about them dressing up as & making fun of music peoples, many of whom I've never heard of. So, hey, maybe I know a lot. Kind of.

Again, these are from the "Best Of," & feature ABBA, Shirley Bassey, Blur, George Michael, Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), Steps, & U2. Er, that is, not the real ones. Just Matt & Dave dressed up. (Which is just as good or better?)

14 Conquest of the Planet of the Apes

The following highly disturbing icons are from Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. The fourth installment in the Apes series, this prequel/sequel takes place twenty years after Cornelius & Zira come back in time to pre-ape Earth & are brutally murdered by the human government. (Even though they were from the future, so no matter what humans do the world will still be taken over by apes eventually... Hasn't this movie seen any other movies?) Their super-intelligent baby was rescued & hidden away by a benevolent circus owner, brilliantly portrayed by the ever-subtle Ricardo Montalban. Conquest takes place in the bleak futuristic wasteland of 1991, where eight years prior a plague from space (that's what I said) has managed to wipe out every dog & cat in the world. Humans were forced to replace their beloved housepets with apes; they soon discovered that these new pets were very easy to train, & decided to enslave them. Now, for some reason, after allowing him to live in ignorant bliss for the past twenty years (but apparently teaching him American history as well as training him to speak with a British accent), the circus owner brings the highly-evolved son of Cornelius & Zira to the dangerous big city. The heir eventually names himself Caesar & leads the slaves in an ape revolution. (Yes, that's right; in an ironic twist, the son of the human-loving Cornelius & Zira is the very instigator who encourages the apes to subordinate the humans in the first place.) Have I mentioned this film is also an allegory for race relations? Oh yeah, it's magnificent.

Some icons of Olga Baclanova, star of 1928's The Man Who Laughs & 1932's Freaks. I don't suppose there are too many fans of this obscure early 20th century Russian actress, but it's my journal & I like her. Plus people iconize vintage photography all the time.
